Gaps in employment are normal. People take time out to raise children, care for relatives, recover from illness, study, relocate, travel or search for the right job after a redundancy. Most recruiters understand this — what concerns them is a gap that is unexplained.
The goal is simple: be honest, be brief, and show that you are ready to work now.
Do you need to explain every gap?
| Gap length | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 3 months | Usually no explanation needed. Using years only (2022 – 2024) is acceptable in some countries. |
| 3–12 months | Add a one-line explanation on your CV or address it in your cover letter. |
| Over 12 months | Include a short "Career break" entry with dates and any relevant activities. |
How to list a career break on your CV
Career Break — Full-time parent | Jun 2023 – Aug 2025
Completed Google Data Analytics Certificate; volunteered as treasurer for the school parents' association.
Career Break — Family care | Jan 2024 – Dec 2024
Cared for a family member full-time. Maintained skills through freelance bookkeeping for two small businesses.
Career Break — Relocation and job search | Mar 2025 – Sep 2025
Relocated from Lahore to Toronto; completed Canadian workplace orientation course.
You do not need to share private medical details. "Health-related career break — now fully ready to return to work" is enough.

Show what you did during the gap
- Courses, certifications and self-study.
- Freelance, contract or part-time work.
- Volunteering and community roles.
- Personal projects such as a website, blog, app or small business.
- Caregiving responsibilities that built organisation, budgeting or negotiation skills.
Address it confidently in interviews
Prepare a short, positive answer of two or three sentences: the reason, what you did, and why you are ready now. Then move the conversation to the job.
"I took 18 months out to care for my father after his surgery. During that time I kept my skills current with an Excel and Power BI course and helped a friend's business with their monthly reports. He has fully recovered, and I am excited to return to a full-time finance role."

Frequently asked questions
Will an employment gap stop me getting a job?+
Rarely on its own. A clearly explained gap with evidence of recent activity is far less concerning to employers than an unexplained one.
Can I hide a gap by using years only?+
Using years only can be acceptable for short gaps, but do not deliberately mislead. Dates are often verified in background checks.
Should I mention redundancy?+
Yes, briefly. Redundancy is about the role, not your performance. "Role made redundant following company restructure" is neutral and widely understood.
